History

Morris County was established in 1739 from portions of Hunterdon County. Sussex County and Warren County were later established from portions of the original area of Morris County.

It was named for the Governor of the Province of New Jersey, Colonel Lewis Morris. During the Revolutionary War Morris County was known as The Military Capital of the American Revolution, and much of the county's history is preserved in Morristown National Historical Park. Morris County was a leader in the iron ore industry and mills were built at several locations, including Morristown, Boonton and Dover. In 1830's, The Morris Canal and The Morris & Essex Railroad were completed through the county. They played a major role in transportation of iron ore, coal and freight. Within two years of Morris County's creation, the Townships of Hanover, Pequannock and Morris were formed, followed in 1740 by Roxbury Township and in 1749 by Mendham Township. Several years after its founding the community of West Hanover was renamed "Morristown" and designated the county seat of government.
